When asked whether the FDA has plans to alert consumers about the findings, Arthur Whitmore, an FDA spokesperson, said: “in response to pure garcinia cambogia the study findings the agency is contemplating appropriate follow-up steps, and at this time can not specify what those steps are.” Last month, Cohen and colleagues reported finding a methamphetamine-like compound, which had also not been tested in people, in the workout supplement Craze . Illegal ingredient It’s not clear how long manufacturers have been using Acacia rigidula in supplements (or labeling their supplements as containing the ingredient), Cohen said. At least six products sold at the nutrition retailer GNC contain Acacia rigidula, according to a search of the company’s online store. Cohen said that it’s important to note that Acacia rigidula has never been used in herbal medicine or herbal remedies . That means that although the ingredient is “natural,” it is illegal to use in any dietary supplements. If an ingredient does not have a history of being used as a supplement or herbal remedy, manufacturers must submit an application to the FDA for approval before using it in products.

Change Your Sleep Schedule To Lose Weight, Study Shows
(photo: wiki media) If youre looking for a fairly painless way to lose weight (or at least not gain) researchers at Brigham Young University have a new solution for you: Put yourself on a regular sleep schedule. People who maintain an unvarying sleep routine have a lower percentage of body fat than those who keep irregular sleep hours, says a new study , published in the American Journal of Health Promotion. Led by Bruce Bailey, professor of exercise science at Brigham Young, researchers followed 300 female college students, ages 19 to 26, who were given activity trackers to monitor their movements and activities, including waking and sleeping times. The study participants were assessed for body composition before and after the one-week study period. What the researchers found: Getting less than 6.5 hours of sleep and more than 8.5 hours of sleep was linked to higher body fat High quality sleep was associated with lower body fat while poor sleep correlated with higher body fat Waking and going to sleep at the same time every day (particularly a consistent wake time) was most strongly linked with lower body fat The difference in body weight was greater with more variation in sleep pattern. Women whose sleep patterns varied by 90 minutes a night had higher body fat than those whose sleep varied by 60 minutes or less on average.

Weight loss led to reduction in inflammation
The Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released their annual report: F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future . According to this report, more than half of Americans could be obese by 2030 if obesity rates continue on their current trajectories. This would result in millions of new cases of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cancer, arthritis and other illnesses. By 2030, health care associated with treating preventable obesity-related diseases could cost the United States up to $66 billion per year. This could lead to over $500 billion in lost economic productivity. The good news for millions of people trying to lose weight is that small dietary changes can lead to big health benefits. You don’t have to go on a strict diet to gain the benefits of healthier eating.

“Both obesity and inflammation have been shown to be related to several types of cancer, and this study shows that if you reduce weight, you can reduce inflammation as well,” said Anne McTiernan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Prevention Center at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Wash. Women in the trial who were assigned to a weight loss intervention had a goal of 10 percent weight reduction during the course of one year achieved through a diet intervention with or without aerobic exercise . “So this program was highly achievable and reproducible. We are not talking about drastic weight loss,” said McTiernan.

New Website from Lifetime Health Australia Supports Production of Australian-Made Health Supplements
Instead, the supplements were made of powdered weeds or fillers like rice and soybean, which were used to dilute other supplements that did contain some of the plant listed on the label. Echinacea Some widely used remedies including St. John’s wort and echinacea were diluted or replaced with plants that had side effects including nausea and flatulence, or that could be deadly to people with nut allergies, the researchers found. Consumer advocates-and even groups representing the $5 billion-a-year supplement industry-say it’s time for tighter regulation. “If you had a child who was sick and 3 out of 10 penicillin pills were fake, everybody would be up in arms,” complains a researcher whose study last year uncovered similar levels of fakery.

“With more than 150 million Americans taking dietary supplements each year, it would be a shame if consumers reading this book mistake the opinion of one doctor for the opinion of the medical community as a whole. It is important for consumers to have an open dialogue with their health care practitioners about their dietary supplement regimens, and hopefully this book won’t deter them from doing so.” The abundance of strong studies on the harmful effects of megavitamins suggests to Offit that these supplements are worse than Vioxx. That was an anti-inflammatory drug that its manufacturer, Merck, voluntarily withdrew from the market in 2004 after evidence emerged of its harm to the heart in some people. “I think if vitamins were a regulated industry, you could argue that megavitamins would have a black box warning on them,” he told CNN. Because the industry is not regulated, Offit said, no one knows if alternative remedies are actually the same, or have a standard concentration, from batch to batch. No safety or efficacy data is available, either, the way there is with pharmaceuticals regulated by the U.S.
